About Burnsall

Viewed from the surrounding grassy fells, this gorgeous stone village with its striking walls softened by rich green foliage, presents a picture of timeless charm.

The village straddles the River Warfe at a point were it is crossed by an attractive five arched bridge. It has long been a favoured centre for visitors wishing to experience the delights of Wharfedale. Favoured past-times are fishing for trout or grayling, boating and walking.

The purely rural landscape is of gentle hills with scattered cottages and farms with fields full of lazy cattle and frolicking lambs. Wildlife is plentiful, riverside strolls reveal mallard ducks, moorhens, kingfishers as well as fish skimming over moss covered boulders and stones as the river moves swiftly up stream towards Hebden.

A noted beauty spot is Loup Scar Gorge, a stunning limestone feature of the region. In the village itself there are many lovely features, these include St.Wilfred's Church which is almost entirely perpendicular. The church carries a plaque testifying that it was beautified in 1612 at the expense of Sir William Craven, it treasures include an 11th century font, two hog back tombstones, some fragments of Anglo Saxon work and a lovely 14th century alabaster panel showing the Adoration of the Magi. There is a pretty lych gate and the churchyard possesses the village stocks and a tombstone designed by noted Eric Gill.

This is a village with its own special brand of magic, it is blest with river, gently rising hills, quaint attractive properties and a unique Yorkshire welcome. It is a place to visit at any time of year, but is perhaps more lively in August when the annual village feast takes place. Then crowds arrive from other villages to join in with the fun of canoe racing, tug of war, fell racing and many other exciting events.

Burnsall is found within the Yorkshire Dales National Park between Hebden and Appletreewick, a short distance away is Grimwith Reservoir, with lovely picnic spots.
